Deep Vein Thrombosis - 01/02/01

A blood clot is the simple term for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) otherwise now popularly known as "Economy Class Syndrome". This condition is due to factors that increase the natural tendency of blood to clot combined with sluggish circulation.

There is much debate as to whether the term "Economy Class Syndrome" is accurate. Cramped conditions, reduced air pressure aboard planes and longer flights are reasons which have been mooted for the higher than average risk of suffering DVT after a flight.

There is currently no consensus about the number of cases of DVT after flights but some air lines are now supporting research into DVT.

The following are questions which we have recently been asked many times by victims or relatives of victims of DVT:-

1. What is Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT?
DVT is a blood clot which can cause stiffness and pain. If it moves around the body the clot can cause a massive blockage cutting off the oxygen supply to the body.

2. Are some people predisposed to DVT?
Medical research has indicated that there are some people predisposed to DVT. Those at risk include:-

a. The elderly.
b. People with a family history of blood clots and blood disorders.
c. Women on the pill.
d. People who have had recent surgery.
e. People suffering from cancer or heart failure.

3.
Are there steps which can be taken by passengers to minimise the risk?
Research and medical experts have indicated that the following should be noted:-

a. People should be encouraged to drink non alcoholic fluids.
b. Rise from their seats at least every hour.
c. Simple exercises such as flexing and extending feet or circling the ankles can help.
d. Taking an aspirin is an effective anti coagulant which thins the blood and cuts the risk of thrombosis.
e. Anyone who is in the above noted risk categories can wear compression stockings.
f. Passengers should be alert to symptoms as air associated thrombosis can develop up to a week or more after a journey.
