Airlines Face Claims Over Passenger Blood Clots
- 29/10/01The Independent

High Court claims are to be made against two airlines over alleged cases of air travel-related deep vein thrombosis. Today's launch of cases against Virgin Airlines and British Airways is likely to lead to group litigation against many airlines, said Collins Solicitors, which acts form more than 150 alleged victims of so-called 'economy class syndrome.'Carriers could face a bill of more than £10, for allegedly failing to warn travellers of the dangers of the condition, which may cause potentially lethal blood clots.

Scientists are divided over whether there is a link between flying and developing clots. Collins will make claims on behalf of Lyn Walcott, whose husband, Nigel, died in October last year after a BA flight from Barbados to London, and Peter Wilson, who developed the problem after a Virgin flight from Hong Kong to London in October 1998. A BA spokesman said the firm took passengers' health seriously. A Virgin spokesman declined to comment.
